Here are some additional resources to assist you throughout the start-up process:

The National Child Care Information Center (NCCIC) is a national clearinghouse and technical assistance center that offers information on family child care and child care center start-up.

Consider becoming a New York State certified child care provider, and begin a career so nice it hugs you!

 

Here is a step-by-step explanation of how to become a registered* or licensed* child care provider:

Step 1. Attend an Informational Session hosted by the Child Care Council to learn about NYS regulations, the application process, possible grant funding, and services the Child Care Council offers to you.

Step 2. You will receive a NYS Child Care application packet--the Child Care Council will request one be sent to you from the NYS Office of Children & Family Services.

Step 3. Complete your application packet.
Some things to remember:
> The prospective provider, all household members 18 years or older, and your substitute need to be fingerprinted and complete State Central Registry background check. The Child Care Council offers a fingerprinting service free of charge.
> There may be a possible inspection of water and/or heat source, and/or environmental hazard clearance.
> Completion of a full written application includes detailing example child care routines, explanation of discipline policy & health care plan, and mapping of program area.
> Prospective provider and all household members must submit proof of current medical physical condition.)

Step 4. Submit your completed application to licensing representative/completed application is received by licensing representative.
While waiting for your licensing representative to review your application packet:
> Attend the 15 hour Health & Safety Competency training, hosted regularly by the Child Care Council
> Apply for Start-Up grant through the Child Care Council
> Research updates to new and current insurance policies-liability, health, home and auto.

Step 5. Licensing representative completes a final inspection of program site.
Your licensing representative will visit your program site to ensure that it complies with NYS child care regulations, passes the site if it meets NYS regulations for childcare. Prospective provider becomes registered/licensed by NYS to provide childcare as outlined within NYS regulation. If the Licensing representative does not meet NYS regulations for childcare, inadequacies will have to corrected.)

* "Registered" is the term that describes the NYS regulation of a family childcare home; described as a personal residence in which childcare is provided by one registered adult.

* "Licensed" is the term that describes the NYS regulation of a group family childcare center; described as a personal residence in which childcare is provided by two licensed adults. One primary and one assistant, described as a traditional child care center.
